SEVENTY48 2024

What if…

We have always said that we’re not #InItToWinIt when it comes to SEVENTY48. We’ve always -every year – included camping along the way as part of our plan.

We start putting together our plans for SEVENTY48 as soon as the dates are announced. That far out, we can predict currents and sunrise/sunset, and how much moonlight we’ll have. But we can’t predict what the weather will do until very close to race time. Even the week of the race, we’re updating forecasts every day… multiple times a day.

In 2024, the weather for Friday and Saturday looked manageable, but Sunday was concerning. So we figured that our best bet at finishing the race would be to paddle through the night on Friday night.

So we did.

Historically, we’ve heard from folks that participate in the race once and say, “never again”… which we didn’t really understand. It is advertised as a suffer-fest, but there’s also a lot of pride in working through challenges. And the feeling of successfully crossing that finish line… unparalleled.

But then we paddled through the dark and kept going beyond sunrise.

We fought sleep while paddling, we experienced the pain of our bodies rebelling during hour thirteen in the boats. We fought exhaustion and felt the depletion that comes from sleep deprivation. And part of us finally understood why so many people are one-and-done with this race.

But that’s not us. Our three teams are 60% of the folks that have competed in every SEVENTY48, and we’re still going. When we made the decision to end our race at Kingston last year, we immediately went into planning mode for 2025. Do we know what this time around will bring? No. But we know that it’s time to begin again.

Will we be able to finally three-peat our last-place finish? Will we be able to finally finish again (a feat we haven’t managed since 2019)? Follow along and find out!
